Google’s Recent April Fool’s Prank Might Have Broken Its Security

google april foolsEvery year without fail, Google tries to prank its users on April Fool’s. This year there were a few attempts by Google and one them was changing its front page where the entire site had its text mirrored backwards as you can see in the image above. However it seems that while the prank might have been a simple one, it seems that it might have inadvertently broken the site’s security.

This is according to security researchers Netcraft who posted their findings last Friday. According to them, the creation of the prank led to Google omitting a crucial header in their code that would have prevented hackers from clickjacking attacks. Without the code, it left it open for attack although thankfully it does not seem that hackers were aware or have taken advantage of it.

Netcraft writes, “A remote attacker could also have leveraged this “feature” to display the Google Search Settings page in an iframe on an external domain, and trick his victims into unwittingly changing those settings. A carefully constructed clickjacking attack could have gone unnoticed by each victim until it was too late and the settings had already been changed.” The researchers also reached out to Google who presumably has since addressed the issue. Close call, Google!

Valve’s New Policy Aims To Put An End To Phishing Scams

steam summer saleWe’ve seen it happen before where scammers and spammers sign up for accounts at email service providers, forums, and so on and use those accounts to spread spam messages or to scam users into clicking links and whatnot. Apparently this is an issue with Valve’s Steam platform which is why the company has recently instituted a new policy that aims to put an end to that.

According to the new policy, it seems that Valve will be limiting the access and features of certain accounts unless they have spent at least $5. Presumably this is to ensure that the user is an actual gamer who might have bought a game or two during their time on Steam, or at least made some in-game purchases even with free titles, like DotA 2 for example.

That being said for those who have their accounts limited, some features that they will not be able to access to includes opening group chats, sending friend invites, voting on Greenlight, Steam Reviews, and Workshop items, participating in the Steam Market, gaining Steam Profile levels, using the browser and mobile chat, and more.

Now there are some users who might be using Steam for more social purposes instead of just playing games and are no doubt a little annoyed by this, but if you have yet to make any purchase, you can always opt to put at least $5 into your Steam Wallet to remove the limited account status.

Apple’s New MacBook Can Be Charged Using A Power Bank

macbookMany lamented the lack of ports on Apple’s new 12-inch Retina MacBook. In fact many also lamented the fact that it no longer used the MagSafe charger which many MacBook owners have gotten to know and love over the years, instead the new laptop relied on the USB-C connector, which at the moment is still in its infancy.

However the good news is that due to the use of a USB-C connector, it also means that charging it via the wall socket might no longer be necessary. The folks at Mashable have discovered that it is entirely possible to charge the new MacBook using a power bank. All the user would need is a power bank along with a USB-C to USB-A cable and you would be good to go!

Now that isn’t to say that power bank charging wasn’t possible with previous MacBooks, but they required an adapter but in this case, it seems a lot more efficient, so to speak. This will come in handy for the frequent traveller who might not always have access to a wall socket, so charging their laptop via a power bank on the go is probably the next best thing.

It will also come in handy if the cafe you’re visiting has no available power outlets or ones that might be near you. It’s an interesting idea and one that new MacBook owners can probably take advantage of the next time they’re out and about.

GTA 5 For PC’s Graphics Settings Compared From Normal To Ultra

So you’re thinking about getting your hands on Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto 5 for the PC, but you’re wondering how the game might look across the different graphics settings. After all not everyone has the PC and the necessary hardware to run the game in its Ultra settings smoothly, but if you’re curious as to what kind of concessions you could make, then check out the video above.

YouTuber williextreme has put together a rather comprehensive video in which the different graphics settings for Grand Theft Auto 5 is being compared across the board. This ranges from Normal settings all the way up to the Ultra settings which is more towards gamers who might have a PC gaming rig with pretty impressive specs.

As expected the best settings will result in the most impressive look in the game, but even at Normal the game is still very playable. The shadows in the highest settings look the best, obviously, but the good thing is that the video will go through the different settings and shows examples if you were to disable/enable one of them, like high resolution shadows, for example.

So if you don’t have a particularly powerful PC but would still like to squeeze out the best graphics possible, then going through the different settings and knowing which to enable/disable will help. If you have some time to spare do check out the video above for the details.

BMW’s New 7 Series Model Will Let You Park It By Remote Control

We’ve all seen the movies where cars can be parked using remote control. How cool would that be if our cars these days came with that feature, right? It would be incredibly handy for drivers to get into tight spots or drivers who aren’t particularly confident as standing outside your car and parking it might give them better perspective.

The good news is that you won’t have to wait much longer because BMW’s 2016 flagship 7 series will come with that feature. Prior to this, BMW’s i3 has a self-parking feature, but the 7 series will mark it as the first time that you can actually park while standing outside your vehicle, how cool is that?

Now apart from this rather nifty feature, another feature worth mentioning that will be part of BMW’s 7 series is it gesture control. Basically this will allow the user to wave their hands around inside the car to interact with it. For example users will be able to accept and reject calls using gestures, or even control their media playback. This should be safer than having to fumble for the controls or your mobile device.

Now as for pricing, BMW has not mentioned how much their 2016 7 series will cost, especially with all these new fangled features, but given that the 2015 model starts around $68,500 mark and goes up to $130,000, you’d probably want to start saving.

Heal Wants To Be The Uber For Doctors Making House Calls

healIf you’re sick, chances are you might drop by the clinic or in more severe cases, the hospital. However wouldn’t it be better and easier if you could get a doctor to swing by your house or your location? Granted home visits aren’t anything new, but a startup called Heal wants to make it a lot more convenient and widespread.

Founded by Dr. Renee Dua, the idea behind Heal is simple – basically it will try to search for a qualified doctor around you and bring them over to your location in under an hour, which in some cases might be faster than waiting around in a clinic or a hospital. The service launched in Los Angeles late last year and is opening its doors in San Francisco.

To get started, users will need to download the Heal app (which is iOS-only at the moment, Android version coming soon). Doctors will be available between 8am-8pm, seven days a week. As for pricing, a single visit will cost $99 which is significantly more than if you were to take yourself to a doctor, but we suppose if you don’t feel up to driving yourself, then this is the price you have to pay for the convenience.

To be fair, Heal is not the first of its kind as there have been other similar startups in the past, so while it is an interesting idea, it will have to compete with other similar services that might be operating in the area as well.
